When you are meeting someone’s children

The world of dating is so much more complicated when you are a single parent and there are many traps and nuances that aren’t there in the conventional dating. For example, quite possibly, you will meet someone who also has children and there are a few things that you need to keep in mind when meeting their children.

One of the most important things is to keep the first visit as short as possible. It is more than likely that everyone will feel stressed on this occasion, both you and your new partner, as well as the children. Therefore, keep it short and simple so as to keep the stress to a minimum. Secondly, it is crucial that you are as natural as possible. The children can sense when someone is faking it and this can cause problems later on. The child will simply not trust you.

Also, when you are meeting the children of your single parent partner for the first time, you should not expect too much of a warm welcome. Most children are apprehensive and they might even feel threatened. Just play it cool and try to reinforce the feeling in them that you are not here to replace anyone and that you are not competition. Also, do not feel offended if the child completely ignores you, this will change in time.
